about "Writing for Children and Teenagers"??? A friend of mine saw an article in a womens magazine, a full page color ad about an aptitude test for childrens writing. They claim to teach you how to "crack the market" if they think you have the talent. Claims it's a free test and an into to a course. I'm feeling like I should be very very careful....

  I think you're probably looking at courses from the Institute for Children's Literature, which is actually legitimate and a pretty good program. Have a number of friends here and on Verla's and in my local writer's group at home who've taught for them-- they have a good rep. Maybe google them for more info if you're curious?
  Writing, like anything else, can be learned-- so writing well is all about sustained effort you put into improving your work. Getting outside crit is a really, really good thing-- made a huge difference for me.(but a good local crit group, or cyber crit group can work too-- doesn't have to be school!)

  Yes, my brother actually went through this course for the Institute for childrens literature and ironically I have the aptitude test sitting on my dresser at home. I've been going back and forth with the idea of trying it out. He didnt finish but just to give you a jist of what its about, you pay per lesson once they have accepted you and they send you one assignment at a time to be completed at your own convenience. When your done with the lesson you send your work to a professor or writer that they have assigned to you and they critique your work and send it back to you and then you move onto the next lesson. He apparently really enjoyed it, it was not too expensive although I don't quite rememeber the price and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He discontinued because he had other obligations that ended up filling his time but I would definitely say it was legitimate and could quite be an exciting experience.

    Yea you're the second to say good things about this organization. I did get something in the mail from them this week however, a week's worth of mail is still sitting on my table waiting for my attention...
    Though I do worry about writing something, turning it in to someone and find out that someone else ran with it, yanno?
